Tank generations classify the major technology leaps in the development of tanks in Garry's Mod. This classification system is still being developed but can be viewed as follows:

1st Generation
Vanilla-Only
2nd Generation
Wiremod
3rd Generation
Pew-Pew / Early ACF
4th Generation
Advanced ACF / Daktank

First

First generation tank designs were often thruster or wheel powered vanilla designs, commonly being public dupes or modified derivatives thereof.

Second

Many second generation tanks were developed in the wake of early faction conflicts on Wiremod heavy servers like Snyde, heavily emphasizing wire turrets for their primary damage output. Later designs would implement Expression 2 and other more advanced wire technologies for their primary armament.

Third

Third generation designs are an early evolution on Wiremod designs, featuring limited ACF ballistic considerations and wire-based drivetrains, often being modified wire vehicles fitted with ACF of Pew-Pew. Examples of this would be converted Omegatrion designs. Third generation designs also encompasses basic ACF technology such as GG5 turret E2s, ballistic calculators, and conventional armor designs.

Fourth

Fourth generation tank designs are highly advanced designs built with the purpose of achieving battlefield supremacy. These designs may incorporate advanced upgrades of conventional designs to experimental technologies meant to give factions an edge against their competition. Some designs may use exploits within the ACF addon to achieve a greater edge, but this is looked down upon by the community and is considered "illegal."
